Gaming News Summary 06-08-07

Game graphics to be dumbed down for consoles. Here’s something that surprised me although I should have seen it coming. With DX10 out and Crysis coming out very soon as well it seems that consoles are going to make games like Crysis a rarity. How is that? Well since consoles don’t support DX10 games on consoles will have to do with the current gen graphics while the PC platform allows for much more advanced visuals and technology. Believe it or not, but Gears of War is as good as it will get in terms of graphical technology. Sure there will be better looking games with more objects and higher poly counts, but the visual effects will remain the same.

“To be honest, and I’m going to cast a small pall on the industry here, I don’t think you’re going to get much higher until the next generation of consoles,” Rein told CVG when asked what we can expect from DX 10 beyond what we’re seeing in Crysis.

Rein reckons there are developers who will dabble with DirectX 10 and a couple of PC-only games, or games that their big market is PC, will push the envelope a bit, “But I don’t see people going way, way over what these consoles can do because then they can’t sell the game… they have to dumb the games down for the consoles. Consoles will pretty much define what the next five years of games look like on the PC”, Rein added.

So PC gamers are screwed by the decreasing popularity of their platform due to piracy and other crap, and now we’re double screwed because the platforms that are only becoming more mainstream are forcing developers to make priorities. PC versions will not be very high priorities, so we’ll have to endure some graphically handicapped games until the next generation of consoles is out. Fuckin’ consoles…  From EvilAvatar.

New Project Offset trailer! Finally we get to see some real gameplay from Project Offset (working title). It doesn’t look nearly as impressive as the previous tech demos but it’s got a few big creatures that have further stimulated the rumor mill on the PO forums.

BioShock demo soon? The full game will be release on the 28th but perhaps we’ll get a demo soon? I’d definitely want to check the game out before it’s release but I’ll get it anyway since I’m a total System Shock whore. No I never did complete those games but I was way too young to know what the hell was going on anyway. The lonely atmosphere the games gave me was pretty damn intense though.

According to the latest list of age ratings to be published by Germany’s USK board, a demo of Irrational’s Bioshock is due for imminent release.

Unsurprisingly, the demo has been rated 18 by the board, although its entry on the official USK website doesn’t specify when we’ll be seeing it on the Marketplace.
However, with Bioshock due to be released in all its horrific glory on the 24 August, we wouldn’t be too surprised if the demo popped up in the next couple of weeks, so as to ensure people get a full-on taste of what 2K Games and Irrational will be dishing up shortly after.

If BioShock can live up to that, it’ll be one of those games you’ll never forget. Like… Morrowind. Good times.

DVD’s no longer big enough? It would seem that size DOES matter… When talking about the capacity of mediums such as DVD´s.

You won’t see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn’t a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD. So we’ve worked around the problem by providing different lighting models per city. For example, Macau is always in the daytime, but if you play it during a storm everything looks darker and more foreboding. If you play during a blizzard then things are slightly tinged blue and everything seems more frozen. Of course, playing this track in sunshine will make everything appear bright and yellowy.

Hehe, how long until X-Box gamers have to buy that HD-DVD player in order to play the latest games? Source

New Red Faction game coming! Are you ready for fully destructible maps powered by some super physics engine? I… Am not sure.

During THQ’s quarterly earnings call Wednesday, the company confirmed that a new Red Faction game is in the works.

“Last quarter, we announced Saints Row 2. Today, we are confirming the next Red Faction game,” said THQ boss Brian Farrell in a conference call today.

The game apparently won’t be available until THQ’s next fiscal year.

Crysis release date countdown!! Crysis will be out on November 16th. I have full confidence in Crytek as they did an amazing job on Far Cry and they never delayed it once! That’s why Far Cry was the first nextgen game of the previous generation long before Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 hit stores. Don’t betray my trust Crytek!

Yup…

Google Ads in-game! I don’t have any problems with in-game advertising as long as it’s done properly. What would be a smart move would be if they’d put that good ol’ AdSense box in the in-game server browser of games. That would be acceptable. Advertisement could also be used to make some games more realistic. Instead of having fake ads like in GTA they could place real ads on big billboards in GTA IV or similar games.

Stolar, Google’s Game Evangelist, said, “I’m going to be very clear right now: Google is involved in in-game advertising. I’m going to say it one more time, in case there’s any misconceptions here: in-game advertising. This is an area that Google believes will have tremendous growth over the next number of years. … We are not going to be a publisher or a developer or a portal for games, at all. That’s the jobs of everybody here. That’s why we want to partner with you.”

Sports games are obviously the perfect target for in-game advertising but games like those have been doing in-game advertising for a few years now so that market is pretty much established already. What I don’t want to see are Toyota ads in Mass Effect or something. Stuff like Coca Cola would be doable if the ads were modified to fit the game or something. Like Coca Cola in Mass Effect, that would be funny. Source

MoH: Airborne developer walkthrough’s are now available right here on GameTrailers.

WoW: Wrath of the Lich King confirmed! Oh God… No…

The Lich King Arthas has set in motion events that could lead to the extinction of all life on Azeroth. With the armies of the undead and the necromantic power of the plague threatening to sweep across the land, only the mightiest heroes can oppose the Lich King’s will and end his reign of terror for all time.

You can’t leave the WoW junkies hanging can you Blizzard? No way! What if they would finally pick up their lifes?! DATS GUNA KOST US MONI! So be it, I’m clean and yes I have played WoW for a few days and I thought it sucked like every other MMORPG I’ve every played in my life. Check it out!

ID announced their new game franchise! And it’s called: RAGE! It’s set in a Mad Max-ish world with Asians. Hmm. Weird? Yeah. What about gameplay? From what I have seen thus far: It’s more Doom style crap. ID, it’s 2007. Not 1997.

John Carmack, co-founder and technical director of id Software, took the stage today at QuakeCon 2007 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas for his annual keynote address and reaffirmed the company’s status as a video game industry and pop-culture leader, beginning with the unveiling of id Software’s new intellectual property, RAGE, complete with video footage from the highly-anticipated game. Additionally, Carmack shared details about id Software’s new gaming engine, id Tech5.

Here’s the GameTrailers video page.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is set to be release on the 2nd of October now.

Wolfenstein coming to a theater near you! FUCK! I hate the games and now I’m going to have to add a movie to my must-hate list!

The 2005 film adaptation of id Software’s first-person shooter Doom may not have packed the punch of a BFG 9000 at the box office, but now another of the Texas-based developer’s stable of first-person franchises is getting a shot at the big screen. Variety is reporting today that id’s Wolfenstein series of games is being adapted to a feature film.

The writer and producer behind Silent Hill are reteaming to create Return to Castle Wolfenstein, according to the Hollywood trade paper. The film will follow protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz and his squad of troops as they investigate Nazi experiments with the paranormal in the midst of World War II.

The film will be written and directed by Roger Avary, who won an Academy Award for Best Writing for his work on Pulp Fiction. His previous directorial work includes The Rules of Attraction and Killing Zoe. The producer on the film, Samuel Hadida, has also been behind the Resident Evil movies, and Good Night and Good Luck.

From GameSpot. Man… This sucks. I hate it when people fuck with the past in such an extreme manor as to add zombies and other monsters to World War Two
